@kkdumez ‘s new book hits bookstores and mailboxes on Tuesday. I can’t wait to see how it opens eyes, makes people think, and hopefully connects some dots. A new Sunday, a new Subst*ck. In this one I wrestle with some thoughts from @kkdumez new book, explore the idea of holiness theology, and remind all of us that nuance is important and maybe the journey is the point. Figured I’d jump on a trend I liked. 😆 What’s your basic five year plan these days? It was fun to meet someone who follows me, but also unexpected to be recognized. 😂 I’m glad my stickers are making people laugh and having an impact. 🤩 Thoughts about evangelicals and our inability to accept critique. We tend to get defensive and assume that we are being condemned, and then because we are so sure we are right and everyone else is wrong, we think God is being condemned. Christy, why are you still a Christian? It’s a question I get pretty often especially after people hear about my decade in a Christian cult, the spiritual abuse my husband and I endured at a normal evangelical church, and the multiple seasons of faith deconstruction and reconstruction I’ve been through. It’s Sunday! Which means a new essay on Subst*ck. 😊 Progression of one of the most beautiful sunsets I’ve ever seen. 😲😊 The sun came out from behind the clouds just long enough to be seen and then disappeared into the lake. Sights like these solidify my belief in a Creator who loves beauty, loves us, and gives us abundant grace even in a broken world. A year ago I opened my Etsy store with five stickers pushing back on “biblical womanhood” ideas. I designed these stickers in a laundry mat on a camping trip earlier in the summer. After opening the store, I went camping with my family. Then I watched as the orders poured in. It was overwhelming and exciting!

The Elusive Knowledge of Good and Evil

“You won’t really die,” the serpent hissed. “God knows that when you eat it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God. You will know about good and evil.” What the serpent said made sense…maybe Eve was just confused. Maybe she had misunderstood God’s original instructions. The fruit was lovely to look at, and it would make them more like God. Why would God keep this knowledge from them? Surely, eating the fruit was the right thing to do… The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil offered an elusive promise. Forgetting she was already made in God’s image, and thinking she was becoming more like God,…

Rediscovering Jesus – In the Garden

We were made to be magnificent. Human beings were the culmination of His creation. God lovingly, personally fashioned us from dust. Intentionally sculpted and gave us life. Beautiful…powerful…creative…intelligent…capable…we were built in the very image of God. We were especially designed for relationships: able to intimately know others, and able to walk with God. Until it all fell apart. Christy, you said you were going to do a series on rediscovering Jesus. What are you doing in the Garden of Eden? This is where Jesus starts, friends. This is where the gospel begins! “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He…

Rediscovering Jesus – Rediscovering the Bible (Part 2)

Fresh out of homeschooled high school, and because our cultic group rejected traditional higher education, I was pursuing some online college-like classes through Bill Gothard’s Institute. The stress of assignments, deadlines, and a demanding English teacher was hard enough. But, the impossible task ahead of me put me over the edge. Two of my classes asked me to go point by point through the Basic and Advanced Seminars and use the Bible to prove them true. At first, I genuinely tried to complete the assignments, but I struggled to find verses that actually matched the things Gothard claimed. Eventually, as deadlines loomed and tasks piled up, I grabbed our trusty…

Rediscovering Jesus – Rediscovering the Bible (Part 1)

When people of other religions become Christians, they leave behind their old religious books, the Quran, the Book of Mormon, etc. and start reading the Bible. It seems obvious. But, how do you leave behind the Bible and then start reading the Bible? How do you locate the truth when it’s supposedly found in the book that was used to tell you lies? How do you unravel lies about the God of Christianity without leaving Christianity altogether? These are legitimate and difficult questions. Unfortunately, the Bible can be used to say just about anything. Grab a verse here and a verse there, or just half of a verse, and you…

    The Start of Something New

“How does one get back to Jesus…truly? I would take that. Blog soon?” I’ve been pondering this question for the last few days. The question was inspired by a discussion on a Facebook group for former Bill Gothard students. I had asked these precious people to tell me why they chose to walk away from Christianity and/or the church…or why they chose to stay. They opened their hearts to me…so very honestly. Many of them left Gothard’s organization just to be re-injured by a normal church where they thought they were safe. The hurt is real. And so are the questions, frustration, confusion, anger, and sadness. After all the talk,…
